Modernisation of electric public transport and development of infrastructure for non-motorised transport in the municipality of Reșița
Resita, Romania / 05.2022 - 12.2024
The modernisation of the tram in Reșița is part of a major project to convert local public transport to electric vehicles and to expand the infrastructure for non-motorised transport. As part of the project, 356 photovoltaic modules with a total output of 135 kW were installed. This will significantly reduce the city's dependence on the national power grid and at the same time promote the use of renewable resources.
Lot 1 of the project began with the modernisation of 3.7 km of double-gauge tram tracks and 1.7 km of single-gauge tracks. At the same time, the depot was refurbished and extended by a 1,965 m2 hall for repairs and workshops. A 478.5 m2 hall for the paint shop and laundry and a 2,400 m2 hall with tram parking spaces were also added. The seven newly designed stations with 27,143 m2 of modernised tram platforms improve the quality of infrastructure in the municipality. The 21,047 m² of green space around the tram lines will improve the quality of life and modernise the appearance of the area. The superstructure of the 228 metre-long Tiraj Bridge, which is used by trams, was also extensively renovated.

Modernisation of the tram in Reșița
As part of Lot 2, the specialists modernised a further 4.63 km of double tram tracks with a total of 9,363 km of infrastructure, superstructure, points and crossings, depot lines as well as the line network and rectifier substations. Nine passenger transport stations were built or renovated along the route. The greening of the tram tracks and the planting of 341 trees created a further 15,821 m2 of green space. This construction phase also included the adaptation of the surrounding road infrastructure with carriageway, pavements, kerbs, bollards, etc. On the Doman and Libertății bridges, a separate lane was built for public transport and for emergency vehicles, each with a length of 60 and 160 metres respectively. The project is rounded off with the creation of 5.13 km of cycle paths.
After completion of the work in December 2024, the tram service in Reșița was able to resume after a break of almost 13 years. A great achievement by the project team, which has made an important contribution to optimising public transport as part of the urban mobility project and thus to a greener and more sustainable future for the residents of Reșița.
